These are the materials I use in this tutorial. You can use whatever yarn and hook you’d like as long as they’re a good match. If you need help matching your hook size with the proper yarn weight, you can take a look at my quick reference card here.

Abbreviations used in this half granny square crochet pattern:

ch – chain
st – stitch
hk – hook
sl st – slip stitch
sk – skip
ws – wrong side
rs – right side
mc – magic circle (aka magic ring)
dc – double crochet
3-dc cluster – 3 double crochet made in same st
(…) x – repeat instructions indicated number of times
[…] – number of stitches in row/round
PH – photo for reference

The Half Granny Square Pattern:

NOTES:

  • “st space” refers to the gap/space that is created between 3-dc clusters
  • If you want to make the square larger or smaller, make more rows or remove rows!
  • A full photo reference is provided below the instructions. You can match the “PH” photo reference per round to that image below so you can see it all coming together in one spot.

Begin by making a magic circle (magic ring) with Color A

Rnd 1 (ws): ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 turning ch here and throughout), 3-dc cluster into mc, ch 2, 3-dc cluster into mc, ch 1, dc, close mc, turn [8] photo below

Fasten off Color A

Rnd 2 (rs): join Color B in top of first dc and ch 4, 3-dc cluster in first ch-1 sp, (3-dc cluster, ch 2, 3-dc cluster) in corner space, 3-dc cluster in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in top of turning ch, turn [14]

Fasten off Color B

Rnd 3 (ws): join Color C in top of first dc and ch 4, 3-dc cluster in first ch-1 sp, 3-dc cluster in next st space, (3-dc cluster, ch-2, 3-dc cluster into corner sp), 3-dc cluster in next st space, ch 1, dc in top of turning ch, turn [20]

Fasten off Color C

Rnd 4 (rs): join Color D in top of first dc and ch 4, 3-dc cluster in first ch-1 sp, 3-dc cluster in next 2 st spaces, (3-dc cluster, ch-2, 3-dc cluster into corner sp), 3-dc cluster in next 2 st spaces, ch 1, dc in top of turning ch, turn [26]

Fasten off Color D

Rnd 5 (ws): join Color A in top of first dc and ch 4, 3-dc cluster in first ch-1 sp, 3-dc cluster in next 3 st spaces, (3-dc cluster, ch-2, 3-dc cluster into corner sp), 3-dc cluster in next 3 st spaces, ch 1, dc in top of turning ch, turn [32]

Fasten off Color A

Rnd 6 (rs): join Color B in top of first dc and ch 4, 3-dc cluster in first ch-1 sp, 3-dc cluster in next 4 st spaces, (3-dc cluster, ch-2, 3-dc cluster into corner sp), 3-dc cluster in next 4 st spaces, ch 1, dc in top of turning ch, turn [38]

Fasten off Color B

Rnd 7 (ws): join Color C in top of first dc and ch 4, 3-dc cluster in first ch-1 sp, 3-dc cluster in next 5 st spaces, (3-dc cluster, ch-2, 3-dc cluster into corner sp), 3-dc cluster in next 5 st spaces, ch 1, dc in top of turning ch, turn [44]

Fasten off Color C

Rnd 8 (rs): join Color D in top of first dc and ch 4, 3-dc cluster in first ch-1 sp, 3-dc cluster in next 6 st spaces, (3-dc cluster, ch-2, 3-dc cluster into corner sp), 3-dc cluster in next 6 st spaces, ch 1, dc in top of turning ch [50]

Fasten off and weave in ends.
