Abbreviations used in this granny square crochet pattern:

ch – chain
st – stitch
hk – hook
sl st – slip stitch
sk – skip
ws – wrong side
rs – right side
mc – magic circle (aka magic ring)
dc – double crochet
3-dc cluster – 3 double crochet made in same st
(…) x – repeat instructions indicated number of times
[…] – number of stitches in row/round
PH – photo for reference

The Double Crochet Granny Square Pattern:

NOTES:

  • “st space” refers to the gap/space that is created between 3-dc clusters
  • If you want to make the square larger or smaller, make more rows or remove rows!

Begin by making a magic circle (magic ring) with Color A

Rnd 1 (ws): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), dc 2 into mc, ch 2, (3-dc cluster into mc, ch 2) x3, sl st to 1st st, close mc, turn [12] PH 01

Fasten off Color A

Rnd 2 (rs): join Color B in any ch-2 corner sp and ch 3, dc 2 into same sp, ch 2, 3-dc cluster into same corner sp, (in next corner sp 3-dc cluster, ch 2, 3-dc cluster) x3, sl st to 1st st, turn [24] PH 02
