🌿 Eco-Friendly Crafting

What makes this crochet pattern eco-friendly and sustainable?

THE YARN: I use only sustainable and eco-friendly yarn that has been ethically grown/raised and processed, putting the people and the planet first. This is why I chose 100% natural yarn for this pattern.

THE STUFFING: Little projects like this are perfect for stuffing with all those yarn ends and scraps you’ve been keeping! Or, you can use fiber strips from old napkins and rags you’re about to throw out. Alternatively, try using recycled polyester or recycled cotton!

HANDMADE FOR LONGEVITY: Creating your own strawberry promotes mindful consumption. This durable, handmade squishy berry reduces the need for mass-produced alternatives.

THE SLOW YARN MOVEMENT: I’m participating in the Slow Yarn Movement. There’s far too much to talk about here, but please take a few minutes to learn about what this means by reading the article I wrote about the Slow Yarn Movement as part of my 6-part Sustainable Crochet Series.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable crochet you can read all about it in the 6-part series I wrote covering everything about Sustainable Crochet and how to implement it into your own crafting starting today!

The Strawberry Crochet Pattern:

Stem & Leaves

The leaves, stem and berry are all worked separately and then stitched together.

STEM:

Row 1: ch 4, sl st in the first back bump from the hk, sl st in the next 3 bumps. Fasten off.

LEAVES:

Rnd 1: st 6 sc in a mc [6]

Rnd 2: (sl st in next st, ch 4, sl st in each of 4 back bumps of the ch) x6, sl st to first st. Fasten off.

Using your hook, pull the yarn tails from the stem through the center of the magic circle of the leaves. Using the yarn tails from the stem and leaves, make a knot under the leaves to secure.

The Berry

The strawberry is worked in continuous rounds – do not sl st to join at the end of each round

Rnd 1: st 6 sc in a magic circle [6]

Rnd 2: sc in each st around [6]

Rnd 3: inc in each st around [12]

Rnd 4: sc in each st around [12]

Rnd 5: (sc in next st, inc in next st) x6 [18]

Rnd 6: sc in each st around [18]

Rnd 7: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) x6 [24]

Rnd 8: sc in each st around [24]

Rnd 9: (sc in next 3 st, inc in next st) x6 [30]

Rnd 10-12: sc in each st around [30]

Rnd 13: (sc in next 3 st, dec in next st) x6 [24]

Rnd 14: (sc in next 2 st, dec in next st) x6 [18]

Use either white embroidery thread, or a long strand of DK yarn which has been split in two to embroider several seeds through the skin of the berry.

Rnd 15: (sc in next st, dec in next st) x6 [12]

Stuff berry (this is a great time to use up the tiny yarn snippets you’ve been saving from other projects!)

Rnd 16: dec in each st around [6]

Snip a long tail and using a tapestry needle, loosely thread the needle through the front loop of each remaining stitch. Do not pull tightly closed just yet.

Stuff the yarn strands from the stem & leaves into the hole and now, pull tightly on the red tail to close the circle. Using the red yarn tail, sew the stem and leaves onto the strawberry using two loops from under a leaf and one loop from the top of round 15. Continue all the way around with all 6 leaves. Pull the red yarn to the center of the strawberry and snip end.

I thought these patterns were free but it seems like I need to create an account and add my credit card? Am I missing something?

Hi there! You definitely don’t have to add your credit card – they are free. I’m not sure what link you’re clicking on but I wouldn’t request your credit card so I don’t recommend putting it anywhere!

Hi – probably a silly question but on the berry pattern, it says inc. Does that mean you do two single crochets in the same stitch or is it an actual increase stitch? Like two single crochets connected together in the same stitch?

    1. Lindsey Avatar

Hi Sarah! “inc” is the abbreviation for increase. In this case it is a sc increase where you will make 2 complete single crochet stitches into the same stitch.
