What is a Romanian Cord?

A Romanian cord is a type of crochet cord that is both strong and sturdy, making it ideal for projects that require durability. Unlike simple chains, the Romanian cord has a textured, rope-like appearance, which adds an interesting visual element to your work. It’s a great way to elevate the look of your handmade items while ensuring they hold up well over time.

Materials Needed

To crochet a Romanian cord, you will need:

  • Yarn of your choice: I recommend using a yarn with little to no stretch if you’re going to use it for handles or straps. This ensures your full bag or tote won’t droop or sag at the handles.
  • A crochet hook suitable for your yarn weight: PRO TIP – the stitch used to make the Romanian cord is simply a single crochet with a “twist”. The stitch has a reputation for being quite tight, so I recommend either going UP a hook size (based on the recommended hook size of the yarn you’re using), or take care with your tension and be sure to crochet loosely.
  • Scissors
  • A tapestry needle (optional, for weaving in ends)

The Romanian Cord Crochet Tutorial Step-by-Step Method:

Written steps only: (written steps with photo tutorials follow)

  1. Begin by making a slip knot onto your hook
  2. Chain 2
  3. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook
  4. Rotate your work so the sc you just made is on top (looking straight down onto it). Find the loop at the base of the “v” of the sc you just made and insert your hook under it, top to bottom
  5. Yarn over and pull through. Yarn over and pull through both loops, completing your single crochet.
  6. Rotate your work again, so the sc you just made is on top (looking straight down onto it). You’ll see that there are now 2 loops at the base of the single crochet “v”. Insert your hook under both of those loops, top to bottom
  7. Yarn over and pull through. Yarn over and pull through both loops, completing another single crochet.
  8. Repeat steps 6 & 7 until you reach the desired length.
  9. Snip, pull the tail through the last loop on the hook and tighten to secure. Weave in ends (or use them to tie your cord to whatever you’re using it for!)

Tips for Crocheting a Romanian Cord

  • Tension: Maintain consistent tension throughout your work to ensure your cord looks even. The side single crochet stitch used for this cord can tend to be tight, so take note of that if you’re struggling to get your hook under those two loops under the single crochet “v”. It should be easy and flow well. If not, loosen up on your tension, or go UP a hook size based on what your yarn weight recommends.
  • Yarn and Hook Size: The thickness of your yarn and the size of your hook will affect the thickness of the cord. Experiment with different sizes to find the perfect look and function for your project. For the brown cord in my sample, I used Lion Brands Just Hemp yarn, doubled up which created a super thick and sturdy cord with no stretch or give – perfect for the handbag handles I needed the cord for!
  • Use: Romanian cords are perfect for bag handles, drawstrings, decorative trims, and more!
