Allow me a moment of nostalgia…

Carrots have always been one of my very favorite vegetables. I remember as a small girl, pulling them up out of our garden with my dad, rinsing them with the hose and eating them fresh within minutes of pulling them from the warm earth – long dangly root and all. When it comes to eating vegetables it just doesn’t get much better than that. These days, I absolutely love cooking with rainbow carrots in-particular. Their vibrant and interesting color adds such a special touch to the dinner plate. So in honor of these beautiful market vegetables, here is a crochet carrot pattern for you!

Ways to use your crochet carrots:

These little veggies aren’t just cute—they’re versatile, too! Here are a few creative ways to use your finished crochet carrots:

  • Play Food – Add them to a play kitchen or farmer’s market stand for hours of imaginative fun.
  • Easter Basket Filler – A sweet and sustainable alternative to plastic eggs or candy.
  • Home Decor – Arrange them in a basket for a farmhouse-style kitchen display.
  • Gift Topper – Tie one to a wrapped gift for a charming handmade touch.
  • Pet Toys – If you have a small pet, you can stuff them with crinkle paper or catnip for an eco-friendly toy.

Your Guide to Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Crochet Image Heart Yarn

What makes this crochet pattern eco-friendly and sustainable?

THE YARN: I use only sustainable and eco-friendly yarn that has been ethically grown/raised and processed, putting the people and the planet first. This is why I chose 100% ethical merino wool yarn for this pattern.

THE STUFFING: I used recycled polyester (100% post-consumer) to stuff this piece. You can also use your saved-up yarn snippets, recycled cotton, or ratty clothes or fiber you’ve cut into strips.

THE SLOW YARN MOVEMENT: I’m participating in the Slow Yarn Movement. There’s far too much to talk about here, but please take a few minutes to learn about what this means by reading the article I wrote about the Slow Yarn Movement as part of my 6-part Sustainable Crochet Series.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable crochet you can read all about it in the 6-part series I wrote covering everything about Sustainable Crochet and how to implement it into your own crafting starting today!

Large Crochet Carrot:

STEM & LEAVES:

NOTES:

Use the green yarn and leave a starting tail of 4 inches

Row 1: ch 35, sc in the 2nd ch from the hk, and in the next 9 ch, sl st in next 2 ch, (ch 11, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 9 ch, sl st in the next 2 ch along the stem) x4 for a total of 5 leaves. Sl st all the way back down the stem to the start of your chain. PH 02

  • The carrot root is worked in continuous rounds – do not join at the end of each round
  • Use your choice of mixed colors (purple, orange or yellow) for the carrots

Rnd 21-28: sc in each st around [6] STUFF AGAIN

Rnd 29: dec around [3]

Pull yarn through last two loops and snip, leaving a 4 inch tail. Using a tapestry needle, weave the yarn tail through the front loop of the remaining 3 stitches. Fasten off. Snip, leaving 2 inches. Fray yarn end for root.

ADD LATERAL ROOT SCARS: Using a tapestry needle and a length of embroidery thread or a DK weight yarn split into two (4 strands each), weave your need into the carrot, towards the top and out the opposite side, then thread the needle back into the carrot, 2 stitches to the right or left. Continue this randomly several times over the carrot (12-15 on large, 10 on small), adding little bits of realistic root scars all around the outer skin. Pull gently with each one, so the root scars create little dimples, causing the carrot to become a bit bumpy all around.
