Crochet Scarf Pattern: Free Beginner Scarf + Video Tutorial

There comes a point when you’ve made enough practice swatches and you’re ready for them to turn into something you can actually wear. That’s where the Juniper Scarf comes in. It’s a beginner-friendly crochet scarf pattern worked back and forth in rows, so you can settle in, find your rhythm, and watch your scarf grow one row at a time.

Juniper started as one of the first-project options in my free Learn to Crochet Course. I wanted it to feel like a real project, but not one that makes you stare at the pattern wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into. You’ll practice turning, counting, and following the instructions—and end up with a scarf at the end. A pretty good deal, if you ask me.

You can follow the free written pattern below, watch the video tutorial, or keep both open and crochet along with me.

About the Juniper Crochet Scarf Pattern

Juniper is worked flat, back and forth in rows. That means you can see the fabric taking shape as you go and get comfortable with the little routine of finishing a row, turning your work, and starting the next one.

And if your first few rows have a little personality? That’s fine. Scarves are wonderfully forgiving, and nobody is going to inspect your edges with a clipboard. Keep going; the rhythm gets easier as you settle into it.

I’ve created a helpful video tutorial for this pattern as well. You can find that further down in this post or access it straight away on YouTube here.

Before you start

Give the pattern a quick read before you begin and check the notes about turning chains, stitch counts, and repeats. You don’t need to memorize anything—just get a feel for how the scarf comes together.

As you work, counting at the end of a row can help catch a missed stitch before it has a chance to become a whole situation. If you lose track, take a breath, count what you have, and back up a few stitches if needed. Crochet has a built-in undo button.

Want to crochet along with the course?

This Juniper Crochet Scarf Pattern is also part of Module 3, Lesson 6 of my free Learn to Crochet Course. In that lesson, I make the scarf alongside Pip the Owl, so you can choose between a project worked in rows and one worked in the round—or make both if you’re feeling ambitious.

🌿 Eco-Friendly Crafting

What makes this crochet pattern eco-friendly and sustainable?

THE YARN: I use only sustainable and eco-friendly yarn that has been ethically grown/raised and processed, putting the people and the planet first. This is why I chose 100% natural yarn for this pattern.

HANDMADE FOR LONGEVITY: Creating your own wearable accessories promotes mindful consumption. This durable, handmade crochet scarf pattern reduces the need for mass-produced alternatives.

THE SLOW YARN MOVEMENT: I’m participating in the Slow Yarn Movement. There’s far too much to talk about here, but please take a few minutes to learn about what this means by reading the article I wrote about the Slow Yarn Movement as part of my 6-part Sustainable Crochet Series.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable crochet you can read all about it in the 6-part series I wrote covering everything about Sustainable Crochet and how to implement it into your own crafting starting today!

Yes! Juniper was created as a beginner-friendly first project. You’ll work back and forth in rows and practice turning, counting stitches, and following a written pattern.

Absolutely! This pattern is a repeatable section which includes 8 rows of dc, 4 rows of sc, 6 rows of hdc, 4 rows of sc and then those 4 sections repeat for the length of the scarf. Stop whenever you’re happy with the length or keep going until it’s the length you love!

Absolutely! I used yarn that I already had on hand that I knew would work well for a cozy scarf. Whatever yarn fiber you decide to go with, I recommend sticking with worsted weight yarn, paired with a 5.5mm hook.
