My dad loved growing corn in our big garden and I have vivid memories of husking corn ALL. THE. TIME. in the summer growing up in the farm and dairy corner of Northwestern Washington. Sitting on the steps of our back deck, looking out at the cow pasture that immediately bordered our back yard, my sister and I would shuck and shuck and shuck. So I guess eating corn is not only a delicious experience for me, it is a nostalgic one for me as well.

Now, I never fail to invite my kids to shuck corn with me – sitting on the steps of our back porch (although with a MUCH less scenic view into the back alley and the neighbors’ garbage cans that line it).

Corn Free Crochet Pattern Guide:

Size & Gauge:

Size: 6.25″ tall x 2″ wide

Gauge: N/A. Ultimately with toys, gauge doesn’t matter. It won’t have to fit someone’s body or a specific space. My patterns will include the size of the finished toy based on the yarn and hook I use. But if you want it smaller or bigger, just use a bigger yarn and hook! Just remember, when crocheting toys, crochet tightly and choose a hook one size smaller than the yarn size recommends in order to avoid holes between each stitch where the stuffing will show through.

Hoooked soft cotton DK yarn

Yarn & Stuffing:

Yarn: Take your choice of yarn! Choose colors that bring you joy and fibers that feel good between your fingers. I use 100% cotton yarn because I make these toys for my kids and need them to be functional. Cotton is natural, washable, soft, and relatively inflexible so the toys don?t stretch and sag ? even after being thrown across the house, down the stairs and adventured through every part of the garden!

Stuffing: Stuff more than you think you should. Not enough for the stitches to stretch and show holes, but enough to make the toy stiff and able to withstand the rough trials of toy life. The filling will compress a bit over time. I encourage you to use an alternative to poly-fill (unless it’s recycled!). Try using leftover yarn scraps and snippets or old non-donate-able clothes and materials cut into strips. For this corn free crochet pattern, I used recycled polyester stuffing.

What makes this pattern eco-friendly and sustainable?

THE YARN: I use only sustainable and eco-friendly yarn that has been ethically grown/raised and processed, putting the people and the planet first. This is why I chose 100% recycled cotton yarn for this pattern.

THE STUFFING: I used 100% Post-Consumer Recycled Polyester Filling (recycled water bottles) for this corn free crochet pattern. You can also use recycled cotton stuffing, left over yarn snippets (save them all – they add up fast!) or old fiber you’ve cut into strips.

THE SLOW YARN MOVEMENT: I’m participating in the Slow Yarn Movement. There’s far too much to talk about here, but please take a few minutes to learn about what this means by reading the article I wrote about the Slow Yarn Movement as part of my 6-part Sustainable Crochet Series.

I’M MAKING SUSTAINABLE TOYS FOR MY KIDS: This is the reason I learned how to crochet to begin with! I wanted my son to have mostly sustainable toys to play with as I eliminated a huge amount of non-renewable plastics from our home.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable crochet you can read all about it in the 6-part series I did covering everything about Sustainable Crochet and how to implement it into your own crafting starting today!

The Pattern

Special Stitches used in this pattern:

Ear of Corn:

NOTES:

  • Refer to video tutorial for guidance
  • The cob is worked in continuous rounds – do not join after each round

Rnd 1:st 8 hdc in a magic circle[8]
Rnd 2:1 puff in each st around[8]
Rnd 3:2 puffs in each st around[16]
Rnd 4:1 puff in each st around[16]
Rnd 5:(puff in next 7 st, 2 puffs in next st) x2[18]
Rnd 6-19:1 puff in each st around [18]
Stuff corn
Rnd 20:hdc in each st around[18]
Rnd 21:(sc, dec) x6 [12]
Finishing stuffing corn
Rnd 22:dec around[6]
Snip yarn, leaving a 6 inch tail. Pull through final two loops. Using the yarn tail and a tapestry needle, weave yarn through front loops only of the remaining 6 stitches and pull tightly to close – PH 07. Bring yarn to inside and back outside a side wall. Snip cleanly with the surface.

Stem & Husks

NOTES:

  • Refer to the video tutorial for guidance
  • The stem is worked in continuous rounds – do not join after each round
  • The husks are worked in turning rows – ch 1 at the end of each row does not count as a st
Rnd 1:st 6 sc in a magic circle[6]
Rnd 2:inc in each st around[12]
Rnd 3:BLO sc around[12]
Rnd 4-5:sc around | PH 08[12]
Rnd 6:FLO (sc, inc) x6 | PH 09[18]
Rnd 7:(sc 2, inc) x6 | PH 10[24]
We will now split the stem to make the 3 husks. Each husk will begin with 12 stitches – the husks overlap by 6 stitches. For the first husk, begin straight away where you left off after Rnd 7.
Row 8:BLO hdc 12, ch 1, turn | PH 11[12]
Row 9-12:hdc across, ch 1, turn[12]
Row 13:hdc dec, hdc across until the last 2 st, hdc dec over the last 2 st, ch 1, turn[10]
Row 14-15:hdc across, ch 1, turn[10]
Row 16-27:Repeat Rnds 13-15, x4 more times. In other words, repeat Rnds 13-15 until you get down to just one final stitch! Fasten off and weave in end.
Make the 2nd husk: With the right side of the husk facing you, count 6 stitches (along Rnd 7) to the right of the completed husk – PH 12 – Rejoin yarn in that stitch and repeat Rows 8-27 for the second husk with this exception: Instead of working in the BLO for the first row of this husk, you?ll work through both loops for the first 6 stitches of the row – PH 12 – and the last 6 stitches in the outer loop that was left available after working in the BLO in Row 8 of the first husk – PH 13. Completed: PH 16
stem and husks in the making

Husk Continued:

Make the 3rd husk: With the right side of the husks facing you, find the remaining 6 front loops from Rnd 7 (PH 14). Rejoin yarn in the innermost of those 6 loops (PH 15) and repeat Rows 8-27 for the third husk with this exception: Instead of working in the BLO for your first row of this husk, you?ll work through the outer loops for the first 6 stitches and through both loops for the last 6 stitches.
