What is the Zodiac Crochet Tapestry Series?

The Zodiac Crochet Tapestry Series is an exciting year-long crochet project that celebrates the 12 astrological signs through simple, beautifully designed crochet patterns. Each month, a new pattern will be released, featuring the zodiac symbol for that month. The patterns are created in a grid-style format, where each square represents a single crochet stitch, allowing you to bring the intricate zodiac symbols to life with simple color changes.

The series is perfect for astrology enthusiasts and crocheters alike, offering a unique way to combine creativity and a love for the zodiac. Whether you make each tile individually or follow along all year, the series culminates in a stunning final project where all 12 tapestry tiles are seamed together to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

A Personal Note About the Zodiac Crochet Tapestry Series

You don’t have to maintain a system of beliefs around the zodiac signs to enjoy the beauty of their imagery and symbolism. The zodiac is rich with history, artistry, and cultural significance, making it a compelling source of inspiration for creative projects like this one.

At Off the Beaten Hook, my focus is on designing imaginative and meaningful patterns that bring joy to crocheters of all backgrounds. This series celebrates the intricate designs and timeless appeal of zodiac symbols—not as a belief system, but as a creative outlet to explore through crochet.

I’ve always been passionate about everything nature related and, although I don’t personally place significance in the belief system surrounding astrological signs or horoscope, I’m still fascinated by those who do and by the rich history behind the zodiac. That fascination is what inspired me to start this year-long project.

So, whether you’re an astrology enthusiast, someone who follows a set of beliefs or practices surrounding astrological symbols, someone who simply loves beautiful designs, or just looking for a fun project, this series is for you. It’s about enjoying the craft, the artistry, and the journey of creating something truly unique.

What makes this crochet pattern eco-friendly and sustainable?

THE YARN: I use only sustainable and eco-friendly yarn that has been ethically grown/raised and processed, putting the people and the planet first. This is why I chose 100% cotton yarn for this pattern series.

THE SLOW YARN MOVEMENT: I’m participating in the Slow Yarn Movement. There’s far too much to talk about here, but please take a few minutes to learn about what this means by reading the article I wrote about the Slow Yarn Movement as part of my 6-part Sustainable Crochet Series.

Aries Zodiac Crochet Pattern Guide:

Size & Gauge:

Gauge is not particularly important with this project. You will be creating a small tile using the yarn and hook size of your choice. The size depends on that yarn and hook size choice as well. To give you an idea, if you’re creating your tile using DK weight yarn paired with a size 4.00 mm crochet hook, your tile will be approximately 6 x 6 inches. Whereas, if you choose a worsted weight yarn paired with a 5.00 mm crochet hook, your tile will be closer to 6.5 or 7 inches.

Materials you will need:

Yarn:

I recommend using 100% cotton for tapestry crochet because it’s stitch definition is hard to beat. Also, it has a nice density to it which appeals to blocking, allowing it to lay flat.

DK will produce a smaller tile than worsted yarn will. Whatever yarn weight you choose, be sure to match it with an appropriate sized hook (as noted on the yarn label). If you’re planning on joining all the tiles at the end of this series, be sure to use the same weight of yarn and hook so they will all be the same size and seam together well.

Other tools and materials needed:

Abbreviations used in the Zodiac Crochet Tapestry Series:

ch – chain
st – stitch
hk – hook
sc – single crochet

About the Aries Zodiac Graph-Style Design

The Capricorn zodiac crochet pattern is created in a grid or graph-style format, offering a unique and visually engaging way to crochet this stunning tapestry. Rather than traditional row-by-row written instructions, the pattern is presented as a 26-stitch by 26-row grid, where each square represents a single crochet stitch.

How It Works:

  • Visual Design: The grid acts like a map, with each square color-coded to show whether it should be crocheted in gray or natural/white. This allows you to see the entire design at a glance.
  • Color Changes: By following the grid, you’ll switch between colors to bring the Capricorn zodiac symbol to life.
  • Single Crochet Stitches: The pattern uses single crochet stitches throughout, making it approachable for both beginners and experienced crocheters familiar with colorwork techniques.

Tips for Crocheting Grid-Style Patterns

If you’re not familiar with this style of crochet pattern, I encourage you to watch the video tutorial I put together to make this an easy, enjoyable project for you.

How to Read a Graph-Style Pattern:

These patterns are worked from the bottom up. When working the rows, you’ll begin with Row 1 at the bottom of the tapestry and work your way to the top.

Beginning with Row 1, you’ll read the graph from right-to-left if you’re right handed, or from left-to-right if you’re left handed. Then, for Row 2 you’ll read it in the opposite direction: from left-to-right if you’re right handed, or right-to-left if you’re left handed. This method continues every other row.

Odd numbered rows are always the right side/front. Even numbered rows are always the wrong side/back. This is important to note when color changing because you’ll want the evidence of the color change to remain on the back size, no matter when row you’re working.

To make the most of this grid-style pattern, here are some additional helpful tips:

  1. Prepare Your Colors: Set up your different colored yarns for smooth transitions between colors. Small balls can help keep things organized.
  2. Count Carefully: Each square on the grid equals one single crochet stitch, so keep track of your stitch count as you move across rows.
  3. Tidy Color Changes: There are a couple of techniques to use with color changing in tapestry crochet. Based on the number of colors and the number of color changes required, I use a combination of 1) working with multiple balls of yarn and dropping it at color changes (not carrying it) and 2) carrying the un-used color of yarn underneath the color you’re using. I demonstrate both of these in the video tutorial.
  4. Use Stitch Markers: Mark the start and end of rows if needed, especially as the pattern grows.
  5. Take Breaks to Review: Pause occasionally to step back to audit and admire your work—it’s rewarding to see the symbols come to life!

The Aries Zodiac Crochet Pattern

Begin by chaining 27. Then beginning in the 2nd ch from the hook, crochet Row 1 and beyond using sc.

Here are the stitch counts, by color, for each row:

There will be 26 rows. Every row will have 26 stitches. The color blocks below indicate how many sc stitches of each color you’ll have per row – color changes indicated by the color the box is shaded with.

Finishing strong

These final steps will upgrade the look of your tile from amateur to expert. Please don’t skip them!

  1. Add a border of single crochet: With the right side facing, place one single crochet in each stitch around the 4 edges of the tile. In each corner, place a (sc-ch 1-sc) to prevent the corners from curling inward. Alternatively, placing 3 sc in each corner will do the trick as well!
  2. Block your tile into a perfect square: Give your tile the perfect finish with a quick steam block or spritz-block. If you’ve never done this before, find everything you’ll need to know about blocking here.
