Washable Mop Cover Crochet Pattern Trio 1

Reusable Mop Cover Free Crochet Pattern 3-in-1

If you have a young and active family like I do, keeping the floors clean is a CONSTANT battle. Every day as I lament cleaning up some sticky gunk by the back door AGAIN, I remind myself, “We live here. We live here. We live here.” I don’t know why I think that there’s actually any possibility we can get through an entire day looking like no one has stepped foot on my just-mopped floors. But I digress. The point is, I needed something practical and sustainable to solve my dirty floor problems. Enter: this reusable mop cover free crochet pattern trio!

My goal with this pattern was to design a mop cover that could replace the disposable covers that are used with the leading mop brands. As I was making the mop cover I realized it would be really nice to have a couple options based on whether I’m just doing a quick sweep between my deep-clean-floor days or whether I’m mopping a grimy well-cooked-in kitchen! So, I went for three different styles. I hope these mop covers will be as useful to you as they have been for me!

What makes this pattern eco -friendly and sustainable?

THE YARN: I use only sustainable and eco-friendly yarn that has been ethically grown/raised and processed, putting the people and the planet first. This is why I chose Hoooked Wavy Blends for this pattern.

I love everything about Hoooked as a company, but their wavy blends yarn could not be more perfect for this pattern – I HIGHLY recommend using it. The texture and density of this yarn which is made with 100% recycled fibers CANNOT be beat for a tough fabric, appropriate for a mop cover that will be washed and reused dozens of times.

And yes, before publishing this pattern I have used mine dozens of times to be sure the yarn and the design will be highly durable and functional for you!

If you do choose to use a substitute for the yarn, I recommend a worsted weight 100% cotton yarn to provide the proper texture and durability.

THE SLOW YARN MOVEMENT: I’m participating in the Slow Yarn Movement. There’s far too much to talk about here, but please take a few minutes to learn about what this means by reading the article I wrote about the Slow Yarn Movement as part of my 6-part Sustainable Crochet Series.

IT’S A REUSABLE VERSION OF AN EVERYDAY DISPOSABLE: These mop covers replace the disposable mop pads that are sold with leading lightweight mops. These are significantly more effective and can be washed over and over again! Plus mopping is way more fun when you’ve handmade the mop, right!?

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable crochet you can read all about it in the 6-part series I did covering everything about Sustainable Crochet and how to implement it into your own crafting starting today!

Size & Gauge:

Gauge: 4”x4” = 13 stitches x 11 rows of hdc

I highly encourage you to make a gauge swatch to be sure your gauge is correct. Also, you can use this gauge to modify the pattern to fit your mop head. Just remember the cotton will shrink slightly so you want it to fit easily prior to washing and drying.

Size: This pattern is written for a mop with a rectangle head that measures 10″ x 4.5″. If your mop head measures differently, use the provided gauge to either add stitches or rows so it will fit properly.

All the mop covers are designed with a couple inches of pocket to slip over the edges of the mop to secure it on. Therefore, please don’t stress about the mop cover fitting a bit more tight or loose as it will stay put while you’re mopping! You can easily give or take 1/2″ on either measurement and you’ll still be good to go. My mop cover shrank about 1/4″ – 1/2″ after drying.

The Pattern

REUSABLE MOP COVER #1 – flat texture:

NOTES:

  • The mop cover is worked in turning rows
  • Chain 1 and turn at the end of each row – the turning chain does not count as a stitch
  • Mop cover #1 is the most simple with little texture. I love using this one for basic “sweeping” as it doesn’t have any texture to grab onto sticky or chunky bits on the floor.
  • The finished mop cover should measure close to 15″ x 5.5″. Add or remove rows or stitches to achieve this measurement

Row 1: fhdc 18 [18]

Row 2-40: hdc in each st across [18]

Fasten off and weave in end.

Assembly:

With mop cover laying flat lengthwise (there’s no specific right/wrong side), fold in ends towards the center by 2″. Using a length of yarn and a tapestry needle, whip stitch each 2″ edge closed – there will be 4, 2″ sections to seam closed. Flip right side out. All done!

REUSABLE MOP COVER #2 – bobble texture:

NOTES:

  • The mop cover is worked in turning rows
  • Chain 1 and turn at the end of each row – the turning chain does not count as a stitch
  • Mop cover #2 creates a bobble texture. This one is great for mopping as the texture does a great job of scrubbing back and forth over sticky and grimy bits.
  • The finished mop cover should measure close to 15″ x 5.5″. Add or remove rows to achieve this measurement
  • As you create the bobbles, just make sure they’re always popping to the same side as each other. For example, on one row you’ll pop them towards you and on the next row you pop them away from you so they’re all popped to the same side as each other.

Row 1: fhdc 50 [50]

Row 2: hdc in next 10 st, (4-DcBo in next st, hdc in next 2 st) x11, hdc in next 7 st [50]

Row 3: hdc in next 10 st, (4-DcBo in next st, hdc in next 2 st) x10, hdc in next 10 [50]

Row 4-11: repeat rows 2 and 3 (you’ll repeat each row 4 times) [50]

Row 12: hdc in each st across [50]

Assembly:

With mop cover laying flat lengthwise with right side facing in, fold in ends towards the center, stopping at the edge of the bobbles. Using a length of yarn and a tapestry needle, whip stitch each of the 10 stitches along the edge closed – there will be 4 sections to seam closed. Flip right side out. Well done!

REUSABLE MOP COVER #3 – loopy texture:

NOTES:

  • The mop cover is worked in turning rows
  • Chain 1 and turn at the end of each row – the turning chain does not count as a stitch
  • Mop cover #3 is the most textured – with curly loops that create a lot of texture. This is my favorite of them all because it is a workhorse! The extreme texture is great for wet mopping grimy floors but is also great for dry sweeping as it grabs every speck of dust and grit!
  • The finished mop cover should measure close to 15″ x 5.5″. Add or remove rows to achieve this measurement

Row 1: fhdc 50, ch 1 turn

Row 2: sl st in next 10, (ch 4, BLO sl st in next st) x30, sl st in next 10

Row 3: hdc in next 10, FLO hdc in next 30 st of previous row (the loop you didn’t use from row 2), hdc in next 10

Row 4: hdc in each st across

Row 5: sl st in next 10, (ch 4, FLO sl st in next st) x30, sl st in next 10

Row 6: hdc in next 10, BLO hdc in next 30 of previous row (the loop you didn’t use from prev row), hdc in next 10

Row 7: hdc in each row across

Row 8: repeat row 2

Row 9: repeat row 3

Row 10: repeat row 4

Row 11: repeat row 5

Row 12: repeat row 6

Row 13: repeat row 7

Row 14: repeat row 2

Row 15: repeat row 3

Row 16: repeat row 4

Fasten off and assemble in the same way you assembled mop cover #2.

SUGGESTIONS FOR USING YOUR REUSABLE MOP COVERS:

I’ve used all of my covers both wet and dry and I’m amazed at how effective they are. FOR REALS. I honestly expected them to be, well, GOOD. But I didn’t know they would be REALLY GOOD.

Here are some ideas on how I’ve used these to effectively clean my floors:

  1. Using a spray bottle with eco-friendly floor cleaner (I use a vinegar/essential oils/water solution that I make), spray several squirts on the floor in front of the mop and scrub.
  2. Fill a sink or bucket with a shallow amount of water and add eco-friendly floor cleaner. Quickly dip the mop into the sink or bucket, allow to drip for a bit, then scrub. (This method is my favorite so the floors get throughly wetted AND I don’t have to carry a spray bottle around while trying to use a mop)
  3. Fill a sink or bucket with water and add eco-friendly floor cleaner. Soak the mop cover in the water and wring out. Then, put the cover onto the mop and scrub.
  4. I’ve also used all of these dry and they are very effective sweepers (especially the flat and loopy textured ones!). I love how they can reach under the couch, chairs and other areas that a normal broom can’t!

Hello! The free version (here) I offer I my blog which is supported by ads.. it would, indeed, be very hard to print. The printable version for all three is available for purchase in my Etsy shop or Ravelry shop. Is that more of what you’re looking for?
