What makes this crochet pattern eco-friendly and sustainable?

THE YARN: I use only sustainable and eco-friendly yarn that has been ethically grown/raised and processed, putting the people and the planet first. This is why I chose 100% recycled cotton yarn for this pattern.

THE SLOW YARN MOVEMENT: I’m participating in the Slow Yarn Movement. There’s far too much to talk about here, but please take a few minutes to learn about what this means by reading the article I wrote about the Slow Yarn Movement as part of my 6-part Sustainable Crochet Series.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable crochet you can read all about it in the 6-part series I wrote covering everything about Sustainable Crochet and how to implement it into your own crafting starting today!

The Halcyon Hat & Scarf Crochet Pattern Notes:

Split Puff Stitch Notes:

  • After row 1, the 2 legs of the SP stitches are worked into the “eye” at the top of the Puff from the previous row. The eye is formed by the first ch made after the Puff or SP.
  • The 1st leg of each SP is worked into the same st as the 2nd leg of the SP just made. The 2nd leg of the SP is worked in the next “eye”.

The Halcyon Crochet Hat Pattern:

NOTES:

  • The hat is worked in turning rows and then seamed together to join into a tube
  • You’ll use a Puff and a Split Puff (SP) stitch – please refer to pattern guide above for instructions on how to make these stitches
  • The turning chain always counts as a stitch
  • The first st of Row 1 will be made in the same st your tch is coming out of – sometimes referred to as a “false st”. Even though the tch counts as a st, do not skip that first st.
  • To put your mind a ease regarding sizing during he first few rows… the fsc stitch is loose and it will appear that the hat panel is going to be WAY too wide. Take heart – as you create your first row of SP stitches, the fsc row will scrunch significantly, but the panel will probably still measure wider than your intended size. As you finish row 4 and beyond, the panel will finally settle into the width measurement intended.
  • The pattern is written for size Toddler with increasing sizes following in parenthesis like this: Toddler(Child, Adult S, Adult M, Adult L)
With hook size 6.50 mm, begin by making 61(67, 73, 76, 79) fsc, and then turn | PH 01
Row 1:Ch 2 (counts as a st here and throughout), SP over 1st and 4th sc from hk, *ch 2, SP over (same st as last SP, sk 2 st, next st), repeat from * across, ch 1, dc in same st as last SP, turn | PH 02 & 03
Row 2:Ch 2 (counts as a st), Puff in top of next SP, *ch 2**, SP over same SP and next SP, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, Puff in same SP, ch 1, dc in top of tch, turn | PH 04 & 05
Row 3:Ch 2 (counts as st), SP over first Puff and next SP, *ch 2, SP over same SP and next SP, rep from * to last SP, SP over same SP and next Puff, ch 1, dc in top of tch, turn
Row 4-7
(8, 10, 11, 12):
Rep rows 2 and 3 | PH 06
Fasten off and weave in end.

Add the Ribbing:

NOTE: The ribbing texture is made by made by crocheting through the BLO of sc rows. However, there is one exception where you’ll sc through BOTH loops rather than the BLO: for the very outer stitch along the edge of the ribbed brim, you’ll make your sc through both loops. The advantage of doing it this way is it creates a much cleaner/smoother edge along the ribbed brim of the hat.

ADD RIBBING:
With hook size 6.00 mm, slip knot onto your hook and rejoin the yarn in the first ch along the bottom of the fsc row of the hat. Then, ch 6(6, 8, 8, 8) | PH 07 & 08
Row 1:sc in the 2nd back bump from hk, and remaining chs, sl st in next 2 chs along the fsc row of the hat, turn | PH 09 & 10
Row 2:ch 1, BLO sc across stopping short of the last st, sc through both loops of the last st, turn (note: you will sk the ch and the 2 sl st’s, making your first BLO sc in the first true st of the ribbing)
Row 3:ch 1, sc through both loops of first sc, BLO sc across, sl st in the next 2 chs along the fsc row, ch 1, turn
Row 4+Rep rows 2 and 3 along the entire first row of the hat. End with a Row 2 repeat so you’ll end at the very bottom corner of the panel of the hat | PH 11 & 12
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming and cinching. Fold hat with right side together/wrong side facing out (your choice) and, using the whip stitch, seam the the hat into a tube (PH 13 & 14). Then, continuing straight away with the same strand of yarn, weave the needle & yarn in and out along the top row of the hat and cinch firmly to close (PH 15 & 16). Tie off well and add your choice of Pom Pom (PH 17 & 18)

The Infinity Crochet Scarf Pattern:

NOTES:

  • The scarf is worked in turning rows and then seamed along the first and last row to join into a tube
  • Refer back to the to photos of the hat if needed! The method is exactly the same, but your rows will be much shorter.
With hook size 6.50 mm, begin by making 22 fsc
Row 1:Ch 2 (counts as a st here and throughout), SP over 1st and 4th sc from hk, *ch 2, SP over (same st as last SP, sk 2 st, next st), repeat from * across, ch 1, dc in same st as last SP, turn
Row 2:Ch 2, Puff in top of next SP, *ch 2**, SP over same SP and next SP, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, Puff in same SP, ch 1, dc in top of tch, turn
Row 3:Ch 2, SP over first Puff and next SP, *ch 2, SP over same SP and next SP, rep from * to last SP, SP over same SP and next Puff, ch 1, dc in top of tch, turn
Row 4-80:Rep rows 2 and 3
